Air fryer capacity: quarts, basket area and batches

Understand total volume, usable cooking area and the measurements that matter for your food.

Volume does not describe the whole meal

Advertised capacity describes volume, while a flat piece of food also needs enough width and length. Two baskets with the same volume can have different shapes. Do not convert a quart rating into a guaranteed number of portions.

A split appliance has a separate constraint in each compartment. The SL401 includes two 5-quart baskets. A main dish that will not fit in either one does not fit merely because their capacities add to 10 quarts.

Measure the usable surface

For your own basket, measure the food-supporting surface with the appliance unplugged and cool. Keep that measurement separate from the exterior drawer and its handle. Record whether you measured a rack, crisper plate or basket base.

Our batch-planning method is an editable estimate: required single-layer area divided by available single-layer area, rounded up. For a rectangular surface, area is length multiplied by width; irregular shapes need a measured estimate. This assumes your food and recipe permit the arrangement and does not certify cooking performance.

Leave room for the process

USDA warns that overcrowding can impede circulation and lead to undercooking; batches may be preferable. Even an area estimate is not an instruction to fill every square inch.

Use a sample portion from the meal you cook, rather than a universal liters-per-person rule. Record its footprint, the number of portions, gaps required by the recipe and whether turning or shaking is needed. Recheck doneness for each batch instead of carrying over an assumed time.
